Technology and Innovation: Turning the “Future of Cities” into a Reality - Kiva Allgood, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

By 2050, 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in urban environments. As a result, cities will need to make significant changes to accommodate the additional people and maintain their quality of life. It is now more apparent than ever that a new era is underway.

In order to support the growth in urban environments, technology has become a key component to success. Just imagine stopping at a gas station for directions. Or using a pay phone. Or looking through your CD collection to decide what music you want to listen to in your car. New technology has made these experiences obsolete and replaced them with faster, easier, more intuitive and robust experiences that are now an important part of people’s daily lives. Better and more streamlined experiences will begin to take shape in cities as they focus on critical issues, such as infrastructure, water and transportation, which technology can be used to address.

Cities around the world are utilizing mobile connectivity solutions to drive increased efficiencies, revenues and cost savings – in areas that range from waste and recycling, parking and transportation, water, lighting and even municipal Wi-Fi.  However, it is increasingly important that we look at these various IoT segments not as separate entities, but as parts of a much larger system. This larger system requires utilizing a common language to ensure that IoT segments work holistically as one interoperable ecosystem as opposed to operating independently.

Kiva Allgood, Vice President of Business Development for Smart Cities, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., will discuss these new opportunities and challenges and provide clarity on how cities are implementing Smart Connectivity today, leveraging a full suite of technologies and solutions such as 3G/4G, Wi-Fi, Small Cells, IoE solutions and much more. She will also describe how the development of long term interoperable, city technology and sustainability plans will improve the quality of life for citizens in urban environments around the globe.

IoT Security Cornerstones - Brian Witten, Symantec
IoT needs security, but security radically different from information technology. IoT devices can’t have security “bolted on” after the device reaches a customer. Instead, IoT devices must have security built in from the start. Unfortunately, this is harder than it sounds, and not much guidance exists on how to do it right. We’ll present four simple cornerstones. We’ll describe how each must be adapted to work, practically AND effectively, in the often (very) challenging environments of IoT. We’ll describe how these cornerstones mitigate an extremely wide range of threats. We’ll present performance data on how newer implementations of newer algorithms now make legitimate security possible even in seriously constrained environments, such as 8-bit, 8 MHz micro-controllers with only 30kb flash, and battery-constrained devices that depend on energy harvesting.

The IoT Market Analysis using a Need-Capability-Matrix - Yuan Wang, Arrow
IoT has empowered “things” like wearables, cars, to “services” such as
transportation, healthcare, etc. However, the questions are: have the
current IoT solutions satisfied every aspect of our needs? What would be
the future of the IoT application development?

In this presentation, Yuan Wang will construct a Need-Capability-Matrix,
with Abraham Maslow’s 8-level hierarchy of human needs and Michael
Porter’s 4 capabilities of smart connected things. She will review a
broad range of existing IoT solutions and map them into the
Need-Capability-Matrix. As a result, she will summarize the current
status of the existing IoT solutions, identify a series of market gaps
for the IoT applications, and propose the next step of the IoT
technologies.

Meshing it up in the Clouds with AllJoyn - Art Lancaster, Affinegy
This talk will show how to make AllJoyn cloud-native; and for the first time developers can stay with pure AllJoyn interfaces for remote application access and services.  Up until now AllJoyn has been strictly a local network technology.  Remote services and remote access have required conversion to REST or other APIs. Some of AllJoyn's best benefits are lost in translation, such as endpoint-to-endpoint security and AllJoyn's M2M distributed intelligence.
Thanks to the new AllJoyn XMPP Connector, contributed by Affinegy, AllJoyn devices interconnect easily and securely on a global basis. Affinegy's new CHARIOT Cloud platform is available now to help companies get their new AllJoyn products, users and services connected. With this new technology, mobile applications using AllJoyn work away from home just like they were still at home, with instant speed and endpoint-to-endpoint privacy. CHARIOT also supports access controls for devices to remote services with AllJoyn Gateway Agent to enhance this privacy and optimize traffic loading to the cloud.

Building a Smarter Digital Life for Citizens - Benoit Joly, Technicolor
The smart home market is expanding at a fast pace and many connected products are now competing to be part of the consumers’ daily life, allowing to remotely control the home or automate different actions. However, some challenges need to be overcome to expand these solutions beyond the home and to foster more innovation in the global digital life arena. Indeed, most of the current solutions are just transforming mobile devices into simple remote controls for connected objects in the home. What is more, the industry is still developping in silos and closed ecosystems. In the end connected objects do not represent yet a real breakthrough vs non connected objects. They just have a new feature, as each next generation of product must have to maintain attractiveness.

One of the biggest challenge the industry must face -and especially operators who want to monetize the IoT- is to think beyond this and propose added value services based on cross-devices data-gathering, independently of brands and OS, as well as granular personalization and learning capabilities. We will discuss some possible services that could be the killer app, and see how we can make it happen using Alljoyn.

And to develop systems interoperability even more we will discuss the integration of such digital life scenarios with smart cities. Partnerships between smart home and utility companies, usage of public open data, sharing information with other homes, buildings, neighborhood, can create smarter cities. We will see how Alljoyn can help generate the next game changing applications for a smarter global digital life, how this can create new business opportunities and impact the digital economy.

IoT: Taking PKI Where No PKI Has Gone Before - Scott Rea, DigiCert
Traditional PKI focuses on binding a public key to the keyholder’s identity, which is assumed to be well-defined and relatively static. In the envisioned smart grid, the relevant properties of the keyholder are not just the device’s identity but its context: This is a refrigerator in the apartment rented by Alice, who buys power from “Company X.” Now, envision how to update device identity as ownership or other conditions change— say Alice sells her refrigerator on eBay.
If our cryptographic infrastructure is to enable relying parties to make the right judgments about IoT devices, additional contextual information needs to be available.

This presentation will explore new ways of how PKI can meet these challenges and others in an IoT-enabled world. The speaker will discuss how to build a secure and scalable system of IDs and attributes for the complex networked world that awaits us all.

It's All About the Data ... - Andy Stanford-Clark, IBM
The key to enterprise adoption of IoT is seamless integration of
real-world events into business events. Delivering a "better" service to
customers, through the enhancements offered by IoT technologies,
provides the most effective route to a justifiable business case for IoT
adoption. Illustrated with examples of his own IoT projects, the

In the coming years, several industries will begin to expand their capabilities for retaining end point data at the edge in order to better utilize the range of data types and sheer volumes of M2M data generated by the Internet of Things. While operational analytics will continue to play an important role in IoT analytics, companies in fast growing verticals (health, industrial, manufacturing, energy, etc.) will move from closed-loop message response silos based exclusively on central cloud processing to longer-term and more comprehensive data retention and aggregation at the edge. By retaining the data at the edge, companies will leverage capabilities for investigative and predictive analytics with a long-term goal of machine learning.

In this presentation, Jeff Kibler will discuss the likely evolution of edge computing analytics and long-term data retention. In doing so, he will explain why operations, data scientists, and executives should begin incorporating an edge computing architecture into their IoT strategies. Reasons include:

· Considerable cost savings

· Providing edge systems with power to run longer-range queries

· With edges being more affordable than centralized storage and analytics, an edge can be expanded (e.g., an edge may change from a building to the many floors in the building)

With lessons learned from precursor industries and IoT pioneers, Jeff will also cover strategies for filtering, cleansing, enriching, storing and analyzing granular data at the edge, while identifying the key advantages of reduced complexity, reduced latency, increased security, reduced cost, and more powerful insights resulting from an edge based architecture for many use cases of the Internet of Things.

Beyond the Gateway - Mitchell Golner, wot.io
AllJoyn is a software framework for products & applications to directly communicate with each other without the cloud. That’s an important & fundamental design element. But what about the benefits of cloud-based data services? The ability for system updates, remote device management, data analytics & 3rd party sharing are among the benefits & features we expect. The AllJoyn Gateway agent is a key component that enables a well-defined, cloud-based network of interconnected data, applications and devices to create opportunity for businesses & consumers alike. Its connection is private & secure, allowing cloud-based services access to devices. Once connected, a business or service provider has a permission based, well defined method to access & manage devices in the network. We will explore the use cases & applications of cloud-based data services operating in synergy with AllJoyn devices.
