IoT: Taking PKI Where No PKI Has Gone Before - Scott Rea, DigiCert

Traditional PKI focuses on binding a public key to the keyholder’s identity, which is assumed to be well-defined and relatively static. In the envisioned smart grid, the relevant properties of the keyholder are not just the device’s identity but its context: This is a refrigerator in the apartment rented by Alice, who buys power from “Company X.” Now, envision how to update device identity as ownership or other conditions change— say Alice sells her refrigerator on eBay.
If our cryptographic infrastructure is to enable relying parties to make the right judgments about IoT devices, additional contextual information needs to be available.

This presentation will explore new ways of how PKI can meet these challenges and others in an IoT-enabled world. The speaker will discuss how to build a secure and scalable system of IDs and attributes for the complex networked world that awaits us all.
